The 2010 edition of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic marked the 21st anniversary of
the $2.5 million European Tour event at the Emirates Golf Club. Known as the "crown
jewel" of the European Tour's three-stop Desert Swing, the event once again attracted
a stellar cast including golf legend Tom Watson, European number one Lee Westwood
and defending champion Rory McIlroy among other big guns.
In keeping with the tradition of the tournament, flamboyant Spaniard Miguel Angel
Jimenez provided a dramatic finish to seal a long overdue victory in Dubai when
he beat a determined Westwood on the third playoff hole, the ninth.
With this win, the 46-year-old veteran has become the oldest player on the circuit
since Mark O’Meara’s victory in Dubai in 2004 at the age of 47. The Spaniard, a
two-time runner-up at this event, said: “"I feel so proud to win this trophy. I
like the (Majlis) golf course, I like the ambience and I like the people and I am
very happy," said Jimenez after receiving the winner's trophy from Shaikh Ahmed
bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The event once again put Dubai on the centre-stage of the golfing world. Much like
the landscape of Dubai where shimmering skyscrapers after skyscrapers are rapidly
ascending into the brilliant blue sky, the Omega Dubai Desert Classic has also dramatically
grown in size and popularity since Mark James became the first winner of the region's
longest-running European Tour event in 1989.
